Mission Statement
Trego Mountain Sanctuary's mission is to promote the preservation of natural ecosystems through public education and through rescue, rehabilitation, and release of Maryland wildlife into its natural habitat.
Additional Information
Many of the problems the birds and animals encounter are due to human intervention and the loss of habitat due to urbanization. As their natural habitat diminishes, life for them in a human world brings new problems. Things such as motor vehicles, trains, mowers, electric power lines, guns, plate glass windows, poison, oil spills, and many others make their life a labyrinth of danger. Many animals are hurt and killed every day. A terrible statistic is that only 1 out of every 5 birds of prey will survive their first year of life.
It is our goal to provide free-of-charge a sanctuary for such birds and animals when they are brought to our facility. Our staff and volunteers provide a safe, clean environment for them to safely recuperate from any injuries that have been sustained. We evaluate the condition of each bird and animal, providing medical assistance as needed. We lovingly care for them during their convalescence, with the goal to always return as many animals as possible back into a safe wild habitat.
We function as a wildlife referral and educational information resource for local residents, local, state, and federal agencies, and businesses, students, and educators. We also offer various educational programs for schools, nature centers, and organizations. We firmly believe that the best means of conservation is through education.
The wildlife of tomorrow depends upon what happens to the wildlife of today.
